A feature length documentary about the legendary recording facility, Smart Studios, and the Midwest’s link to American rock history is being currently funded on Kickstarter. The documentary, “The Smart Studios Story,” features a few of the famous artists to ever record there, such as Billy Corgan, Dave Grohl, and Garbage front-woman Shirley Manson.
The trailer for the video is part of the Kickstarter campaign which aims to fund the documentary with a goal of $120,000. The $30,000 goal of the project was reached (March 10th) with 20 days left for the documentary to be fully funded. Pledges of $10 or more get perks for helping fund the film ranging from being a part of the credits, to signed prints of famous photos of bands, to VIP Producer status and theatrical screenings for the film.
“If you’ve ever been touched by the music of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, L7, Killdozer, Die Kreuzen, Tar Babies, Against Me!, Death Cab for Cutie, etc. you’ve been touched by the music created at Smart Studios, the legendary Midwestern recording facility owned by Butch Vig and Steve Marker,” the campaign reads. “The music and the scene all collided in a two-story brick building sitting virtually unnoticed on the east side of Madison, Wisconsin.”
